It’s an incredible story – from a man who built single board computers for entertainment to a major foundation selling more than 15 million units worldwide.

The story of Raspberry Pi began in 2006 with the first prototypes, inspired by the BBC Micro.
6 years later, the first Raspberry Pi was born. The main objective was to familiarize young people with computers at low cost (about $30).

The foundation introduced Scratch as the first programming language for children.
For those who don’t know: Scratch is a simple language to learn, in which you move instructions with your mouse to make what you want.
It is the first ideal programming language.

The focus remains the same as in the beginning, but it is now focused on the whole world.
Here are some examples of their success:
- Funding for computer labs in Afghanistan and South Africa.
- Help the development of computers in Africa.
- Raspberry Pi gifts to schools in the UK (for example, Google gave away 15 000 Raspberry Pi’s in 2013).

Now that you understand why the Raspberry Pi exists, let’s learn a bit more about the hardware specifications and how the Raspberry Pi has evolved since its creation.
Originally, Eben Upton wanted to make two models: A (cheaper) and B (faster).
You recently built a Raspberry Pi Zero (smaller).

The Raspberry Pi A is not the first model to be released. It was introduced in February 2013, a year after the B.
As I mentioned, they plan to make the A model cheaper, the first version will cost around $25.
They reached this price point by choosing hardware components: fewer USB ports and RAM, for example.
But the Raspberry Pi 1 A is still interesting with these specifications:
- PROCESSIVE: ARM 700Mhz
- OPERATIONAL ROLE: 256 minutes.
- 1 USB port
- 8-pin GPIO
- HDMI, audio and SD slot
An update (1 A+) was released in November 2014, which mainly included some hardware changes:
- 17 GPIO pins instead of 8
- Audio output instead of cinch
- Micro SD instead of SD
So the Raspberry Pi 1 A+ is smaller and lighter than the first version.
Another surprise from the Raspberry Pi Foundation – the Raspberry Pi Model A didn’t get a second version.
They immediately moved to version 3, probably to follow the model B taxonomy.
The latest version of the Raspberry Pi A has recently been released, with the Raspberry Pi 3 A+ due in November 2018.
For the same price of $25 when published, you now get:
- 64-bit architecture with a 4-core processor running at 1.4 GHz
- 512 MB RAM
- All necessary network components: Gigabit LAN, WiFi and Bluetooth.
So that was a big improvement for this model.
For as little as $25, you get a good foundation for learning or teaching any computer skill.

The B model is a more powerful model of the Raspberry Pi, if you can call it that, for a $35 computer.
As I mentioned earlier, the B model was released first.
The 29th. In February 2012, the Raspberry Pi Foundation introduced this UFO to the computer market.
For the first time we saw a single-board computer measuring 85×56 mm:
- CPU: ARM 700MHz
- RAM: 512M
- 2 USB ports
- HDMI, RCA audio and SD slot
- 10/100 Ethernet connection
- 8-pin GPIO
It didn’t differ much from the current computers on the market, but it was 10 times cheaper.
It was an immediate success with 500,000 copies sold in the first six months.
And that was just the beginning of the story.
In July 2014, an update was released for the Model A with the same changes:
- 17 GPIO pins instead of 8.
- Audio output via jack instead of cinch.
- Micro SD instead of SD.
They also have an upgrade to 4 USB ports, giving you more options.
Then they launched the Raspberry Pi 2 B with two shows in 2015 and 2016.
- Raspberry Pi 2 B :
- Released in February 2015.
- Has new versions of major components, but no major changes.
- PROCESSOR: 4 cores at 900 MHz instead of one at 700 MHz.
- Take 1 GB RAM instead of 512 MB.
- Raspberry Pi 2 B ver. 1.2
- Released in October 2016.
- Has a 1.2 GHz processor instead of 900 MHz.
- Migration to a 64-bit architecture.
These are significant changes to the Raspberry Pi’s ability to perform heavy tasks and use a quad-core architecture for simultaneous tasks.
Then, in February 2016, version 3 of the Raspberry Pi B was released.
This is essentially the same board as the Raspberry Pi 2B 1.2, but released a few months later.
Wireless features have been added to this card: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are integrated directly on the motherboard.
Finally, in March 2018, the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ was released with two updates:
- LAN: Gigabit Ethernet
- PROCESS: 4x 1.4Ghz
Version 4 / 400
The Raspberry Pi Foundation will announce the Raspberry Pi 4 in June 2019.
This is an important change for several reasons:
- It has two display ports and uses Micro-HDMI instead of HDMI
- Choose between 1, 2 or 4 GB of RAM.
They quickly stopped releasing a model with 1 GB RAM and added a version with 8 GB RAM in May 2020.
In November 2020, they also released a new original model, the Raspberry Pi 400.

The most recent model in the Raspberry Pi catalog is the Pi Zero.
It is the smallest Raspberry with a length of 65 mm and a width of 30 mm (about half of the B model).
This would be the perfect companion for travel, pen testing, or limited scope projects.
Raspberry Pi Zero
The first Zero model was released in November 2015.
The highlight was the size of the card, but it comes with these specs:
- Price : $5
- CPU: ARM 1 GHz
- RAM: 512M
- 1 Micro USB port
- 1 HDMI mini output
- 17-pin GPIO
It’s very similar to the Raspberry Pi B model from 2015.
Due to the lack of space, we have fewer ports, but the CPU and RAM are adequate.
Raspberry Pi Zero W
In February 2017, the Raspberry Pi Zero received an update that added a WLAN (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) card.
It is also the first version with an integrated camera port.
Raspberry Pi Zero WH
You can find the WH version at your favorite retailer.
The specifications are unchanged and the only difference is the pre-soldered GPIO connection.
If you plan to use GPIO pins, this version can help you get started faster.
The Raspberry Pi Zero W (or WH) is not as cheap as $5 because you can’t do anything with the board alone.
However, if you plan on making projects with minimal clearance, you can buy the Vilros kit on Amazon.com.
I bought it recently and am very happy with it. With the necessary cable and adapter it is easy to get started.

Sales results raspberry beer
While the goal of the Raspberry Pi is not to make money from the product, we can’t ignore the device’s track record of sales.
Many computer brands should be jealous of these results.
Like I said, they sold 500,000 Raspberry Pi’s in the first 6 months, 2 million a year later, and now they’re approaching 20 million sold.
This equates to sales of 3 million per year.
To give you an idea: Apple sold 20 million Macs in 2017, that’s not that far off, and the Raspberry Pi is in a niche market segment.

If you want exact numbers, this is what I found:
- September 2012: 500,000 units sold
- October 2013: Two million.
- February 2015: 5 million
- September 2016: 10 million
- February 2017: 12.5 million euros
- July 2017: Fifteen million.
- March 2018: Nineteen million.
It’s about total sales since inception, not annual results.

We know there have been donations, like the 15,000 units I mentioned earlier.
We know that many teachers have purchased the Raspberry Pi for their classrooms.
Either way, Eben Upton can be proud of the work he has done to help many people around the world learn how computers work and become proficient at programming – all thanks to him.
Raspberry Pi at work
There are many applications for the Raspberry Pi.
Many companies can use it to collect data, display objects, or control something.
I can imagine a backup VPN server, a customer counter in a store, or a monitoring node at a small remote site.
You don’t need a $500 computer or server for this kind of project. All you need is something stable with network connectivity and Linux on it.
At my workplace, for example, I use a Raspberry Pi to monitor the Wi-Fi connection speeds that are actually available to users.
No server could be used for this, the wireless connection is where I wanted it.

Raspberry Pi in theaters
The Raspberry Pi has recently been featured in movies like Big Hero and the TV series Mr. Big. Robot.
With Mr. Robot z. B. The main character is a hacker and uses a small Raspberry Pi to introduce himself to the company he wants to hack.
