Enable or Disable Ask Age Range for Kids Mode in Microsoft Edge

Find out how to enable or disable the age range for child mode in Microsoft Edge. It is disabled by default, so Edge does not display a dialog box for selecting panes every time you start a browsing session in child mode.

When the user first enters child mode, the Edge prompts you to select an age group. This is necessary to configure Edge settings so that your child can access relevant and safe content. Microsoft Edge does not create a special profile for children, but it remembers the age group you selected and does not ask you to specify it the next time you open child mode. This behavior may not be suitable for families with children of different ages.

These users may need to ensure that Edge confirms the age group of the child mode each time it is launched, as content aimed at a six-year-old is unlikely to appeal to an eleven-year-old. In this article, we will show you how to enable the Ask Age Range option for child mode in Microsoft Edge.

In case you missed it, Microsoft Edge recently got a kid-friendly environment where kids can surf safely. When child mode is enabled, Bing SafeSearch is activated, a cute design is applied, and only sites from a predefined or custom whitelist are restricted. A separate article explains how to enable child mode in Microsoft Edge.

Currently, Child Mode is only available in the US on Microsoft Edge 90 and later. Also, child mode is still being distributed, so some users haven’t received it yet, even in the US.

Enable or disable child age limit questions in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Open the menu with the three-dot key in the top right corner or with the key combination Alt + F.
  3. Select Settings from the menu.

  1. Go to the Family > Child Mode menu. You can also type edge://settings/family into the address bar to go directly to the item you want.
  2. Find the Always ask for age range before child mode switch and enable it to activate confirmation, or disable it to restore the default behavior.

You’re done. If you enable the option Ask for age range of children, the browser will ask you to select an age value the next time you start child mode.

You can also change the default age group without enabling the switch described above.

You do not need to enable the Ask age range option for child mode if you only want to change it once. For example, you may decide that the 5-8 year old group does not meet your child’s needs and allow him or her access to the 9-12 year old group or vice versa.

Change the default age for child mode in Microsoft Edge.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to Settings > Family > Child Mode.
  3. Always look for children who are beginners in the chosen age group.

  1. Choose a 5 to 8 year old or a 9 to 12 year old.

As you can see in the screenshots above, there are currently only two options available: 5-8 years and 9-12 years. You can see how Microsoft Edge changes the view options for each group in the Family Options section. The 5-8 age group can use the internet in simplified mode, while the 9-12 age group has slightly less restrictions allowing them to browse articles and news that interest them. In addition, each group has a predefined list of authorized sites, which can be modified in the settings.
